Always check the Belgian Business Register (<a href=\"https:\/\/kbopub.economie.fgov.be\/kbopub\/zoeknummerform.html?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"intercom-content-link\">KBO<\/a>), to see if you should follow B2G rules or simply invoice them as a regular business (B2B).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h_5ba702998a\">Does the government always have a VAT number?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">Almost all public authorities now have a VAT number, but that doesn\u2019t automatically mean you need to charge VAT. It depends on the role they are acting in for your assignment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">Government tasks (public authority role) \u2192 No VAT is charged.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">Commercial activities (e.g., venue rental, catering) \u2192 VAT is charged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h_fcf6b60d41\">What is PEPPOL and why should you use it?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"no-margin\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accountable.eu\/en-be\/blog\/tag\/peppol-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"intercom-content-link\">PEPPOL<\/a> is a network that allows you to send official e-invoices directly and securely to public authorities. In Belgium, these invoices pass through the Mercurius network, which automatically forwards them to the right department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">\n<div class=\"intercom-interblocks-callout\" style=\"background-color: #e3e7fa80; border-color: #334bfa33;\">\n<p class=\"no-margin\">Sounds technical? Don\u2019t worry: with a tool like Accountable, you simply tick \u201cSend via PEPPOL\u201d and your invoice will arrive at the correct destination, fully compliant with legal requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">\n<h2 id=\"h_520457818d\">When is PEPPOL mandatory?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">Public contracts <b>over \u20ac3,000 <\/b>\u2192 mandatory since March 2024.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">All public contracts \u2192 mandatory from March 2026.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"intercom-interblocks-callout\" style=\"background-color: #feedaf80; border-color: #fbc91633;\">\n<p class=\"no-margin\">Important: This obligation only applies to public authorities. If you\u2019re invoicing an individual (e.g., a Member of Parliament) or a non-profit, PEPPOL does not apply.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">\n<h2 id=\"h_d33caad1a5\">How to do this in Accountable<\/h2>\n<p class=\"no-margin\">\n<h2 id=\"h_bda002ce9c\">1.
