And what purpose(s) do they serve?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"nace-code-or-nacebel-code\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\"><strong>NACE code or NACEBEL code?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">The&nbsp;<strong>NACE list<\/strong>&nbsp;is the official classification of all commercial and non-commercial economic activities in the European Union. The acronym NACE comes from the French term \u2018<strong>N<\/strong>omenclature g\u00e9n\u00e9rale des&nbsp;<strong>A<\/strong>ctivit\u00e9s \u00e9conomiques dans les <strong>C<\/strong>ommunaut\u00e9s <strong>E<\/strong>urop\u00e9ennes\u2019, which translates to English as the \u2018Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Each EU Member State follows this list, while being free to add more detail if they wish. Belgium has its own&nbsp;<a class=\"font-inter text-purple underline underline-offset-1\" href=\"https:\/\/statbel.fgov.be\/fr\/propos-de-statbel\/methodologie\/classifications\/nace-bel-2008\"><strong>NACEBEL list, the latest version of which is available (in French) on StatBel<\/strong><\/a>. This list is very long since it includes a specific code for all possible activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-do-i-choose-the-right-nacebel-codes-for-my-business\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\"><strong>How do I choose the right NACEBEL codes for my business?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\"><strong>When you register as self-employed, you need to indicate the activities you\u2019ll be carrying out using the NACEBEL codes.&nbsp;<\/strong>Do you have different \u2018establishment units\u2019? If so, you need to select the appropriate codes for each of them, depending on the activities carried out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Your business counter (e.g.\u00a0<strong><a class=\"font-inter text-purple underline underline-offset-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liantis.be\/en\/starting-a-business-belgium-as-a-foreigner\">Liantis<\/a><\/strong>) can help you choose the right codes and, if you wish, register them with the <strong>Crossroads Bank for Enterprises\u00a0(BCE\/KBO)<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>VAT administration<\/strong>. Your accountant can also help you with these procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">If you have at least one salaried worker, you\u2019re considered an employer. You\u2019re therefore required to transmit your NACEBEL codes to the ONSS. But don&#8217;t panic: your social secretariat can explain the steps to take depending on your situation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-many-nace-codes-should-i-choose\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\"><strong>How many NACE codes should I choose?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">There\u2019s no need to limit yourself to one or two NACEBEL codes;&nbsp;<strong>you\u2019re allowed to register several codes<\/strong>. That\u2019s good news for self-employed people who want to combine different activities without limiting themselves!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">\ud83d\udca1&nbsp;<strong>Accountable tip:<\/strong>&nbsp;When it comes to NACE codes, it&#8217;s better to choose too many than too few. If you decide to add a professional activity later, you need to pay to add an additional NACE code or codes. And be aware that carrying out an activity without having registered the right NACEBEL code can cause you problems. That doesn\u2019t mean you should select dozens of NACE codes, though.&nbsp;<strong>Some NACEBEL codes come with specific obligations, such as taking out insurance, obtaining permits, or even having a licence<\/strong>. So only register the codes you\u2019ll actually use or for which you have the right qualifications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-importance-of-nacebel-codes\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\"><strong>The importance of NACEBEL codes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">When you\u2019re starting out as self-employed, you have a lot to think about. Your NACEBEL codes might not seem that important; one admin task to tick off among lots of others, then quickly forgotten. This is largely true,&nbsp;<strong>since the primary purpose of NACE codes is to divide the economy into sectors and allow statistics and reports to be drawn up<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">But NACE codes can be important for other reasons too. For example,&nbsp;<strong>the public authorities take them into account when determining eligibility for certain bonuses or support measures.<\/strong>&nbsp;If you haven\u2019t selected the correct NACEBEL codes, you could miss out on those benefits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">What if your activities don\u2019t match the NACEBEL codes you\u2019ve registered with the BCE\/KBO? That can also be a problem.&nbsp;<strong>Some codes imply specific obligations, such as insurance, licences, or permits, as mentioned above.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Using algorithms, it\u2019s very easy to check whether real estate agents, for example, have the required licence and insurance. NACE codes are therefore an ideal starting point for monitoring companies in a particular sector and identifying those that are not respecting the rules. <strong>What if<\/strong> <strong>you\u2019re invoicing for an activity you\u2019re not registered for? An inspection will reveal that very quickly.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\"><strong>The VAT administration also uses NACEBEL codes.<\/strong>&nbsp;If you\u2019re requesting a reduced VAT rate for a certain activity, you must have the correct NACE codes. If that\u2019s not the case, alarm bells will quickly ring, and&nbsp;<strong>you\u2019ll probably find yourself subject to a VAT audit<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-about-a-new-activity\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\"><strong>What about a new activity?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Did you forget to add some codes when you started? Or is your business evolving?&nbsp;<strong>In this case, you can take the initiative to add the relevant NACEBEL codes up to one month following the start of the new activity. This process costs \u20ac109 per establishment unit, but lets you stay fully compliant with the rules.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Are you stopping certain activities? It may be wise to delete the related codes, especially if they\u2019re linked to having a particular insurance or licence. If you don\u2019t delete the codes, you might not be able to cancel certain recurring costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-do-i-check-my-nacebel-codes\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\"><strong>How do I check my NACEBEL codes?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Every self-employed individual or company can check their own NACEBEL codes via the\u00a0<a class=\"font-inter text-purple underline underline-offset-1\" href=\"https:\/\/kbopub.economie.fgov.be\/kbopub\/zoeknummerform.html?lang=en\"><strong>BCE\/KBO Public Search<\/strong>\u00a0tool<\/a> or in the\u00a0<strong><a class=\"font-inter text-purple underline underline-offset-1\" href=\"https:\/\/economie.fgov.be\/en\/themes\/enterprises\/crossroads-bank-enterprises\/cbe-my-enterprise\">My Enterprise section of the FPS Economy website<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Other companies can also check your activities there, for example, if they\u2019re considering giving you a big contract. Another reason to keep those codes up to date!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\"><em>NACEBEL codes are important, especially when you start your business.
