We&#8217;ll tell you all about it in this article!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Entitlement to family allowances as a self-employed student<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Belgium, provided you&#8217;re still registered as a student, your parents receive family allowances until you turn 25, even if you have the status of self-employed student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s one&nbsp;<strong>important condition:<\/strong> your self-employed activity <strong>cannot<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>exceed certain limits, both in terms of income and working hours.<\/strong> If you exceed these limits, you and your parents&nbsp;<strong>risk losing your child benefit<\/strong>&nbsp;as a self-employed student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rules are different depending on where you live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student self-employed in Flanders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your net taxable annual income is less than \u20ac17,008.88 (in 2025), you retain the right to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.groeipakket.be\/\">Het Groeipakket<\/a>&#8220;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are you working as a student employee in addition to your self-employed activity? Then, to keep your right to child benefits, you may not work more than 600 hours as a student employee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you earn more than \u20ac17,008.88, you will be considered self-employed as a main profession and will lose your right to child benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student self-employed in Brussels and Wallonia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your annual net taxable income is&nbsp;<strong>less than \u20ac8,504.44 <\/strong>(in 2025), you\u2019re exempt from social security contributions and you&nbsp;<strong>retain your right to family allowances.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you earn between&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac8,504.44 and \u20ac17,008.88<\/strong>&nbsp;(in 2025), in principle, you automatically become self-employed in a main occupation and therefore&nbsp;<strong>lose your family allowances.<\/strong> Because in this case, it\u2019s assumed that you work more than 240 hours per quarter, which is the upper limit to retain the right to family allowances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1<strong>Accountable tip:<\/strong>&nbsp;If your income is between \u20ac8,504.44 and \u20ac17,008.88 and you can prove that you haven&#8217;t worked more than 240 hours, you can have your situation reviewed. Ask your family allowance fund for advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Am I still considered \u2018dependent\u2019 on my parents for tax purposes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019re still considered&nbsp;<strong>dependent on your parents&nbsp;for tax purposes <\/strong>if your income does not exceed&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac4,100 (in 2025)<\/strong>.
