That\u2019s exactly what Quentin Debois does. Except&#8230; he will also try to break a world record along the way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We caught up with Quentin, a 38-year-old Belgian offshore skipper and former entrepreneur, to talk about boats, bravery, and why sailing solo feels a lot like running your own business.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">30 Questions with Belgian offshore skipper Quentin Debois<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin, how did sailing come into your life?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;I started sailing at 31. With no background or experience. A friend invited me on a trip, and I just fell in love with it. There\u2019s something about that freedom, that sense of being completely responsible for yourself and your environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Would you say sailing is similar to freelancing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;Definitely. Starting sailing felt like the same <em>\u2018jump into the unknown\u2019<\/em> as when I launched my first company in 2010. I founded a company in event marketing, and one in sales automation. You have no guarantees. You just decide to go for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And now you\u2019re aiming for a world record?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;Yes, I\u2019ll attempt the <strong>solo Atlantic crossing record<\/strong> this December (2025). About 25 to 30 days at sea, on my own boat. It\u2019s a tiny vessel. You could think of it like a \u201cbig car on water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That\u2019s\u2026 intense.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;It\u2019s ambitious enough to scare you. And that\u2019s a good sign. Fear is a reminder that you\u2019re pushing your limits.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What will you miss the most from land?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> Pizza. Definitely pizza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is this your boat?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;That\u2019s my boat, yes, I\u2019ve had it for four years. So it\u2019s like owning a big car.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is your sailboat tax-deductible?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;It is, yes. But amortised, of course.&#8221; (laughs)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>People see you sailing, but what about the work behind the scenes?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;Most don\u2019t realise there\u2019s a <strong>whole team<\/strong> behind a solo sailor. Seven people, each with a role, from navigation, logistics, weather analysis, to even morale. Alone at sea, I steer for 8\u201310 hours, then the autopilot takes over. But back on land, my crew keeps everything moving. It\u2019s teamwork, just in a very different way.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sounds like running a business.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;Exactly. Admin, logistics, fundraising, coordinating a team&#8230; It\u2019s all part of the grind. Discipline outweighs motivation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And when you\u2019re alone in the middle of the Atlantic, what keeps you going?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;I tell myself: <em>Show up and deliver.<\/em> You can\u2019t control the storm, but you <strong>can<\/strong> control your boat. You adapt, manage what you\u2019ve got, and keep going.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Any moments of fear?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;A little. That\u2019s normal. It\u2019s a signal you\u2019re in a risky but exciting situation. Like entrepreneurship, fear means it\u2019s ambitious enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the craziest thing that\u2019s happened at sea?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;One day, I thought the boat would capsize. It didn\u2019t, but for a moment, I really thought it would.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s one thing sailing has taught you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;To accept that you can\u2019t control your environment. The sea, the wind, the waves&#8230; They\u2019re unpredictable. The only control you have is over your boat, your decisions, and yourself. And that lesson\u2026 well, it applies everywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Solo sailing and entrepreneurship: are they really similar?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin:<\/strong> &#8220;Very much so. Both are about making decisions with uncertainty, managing risk, and embracing responsibility. And the joy is in the <strong>process<\/strong>, not just the result.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Last question: if you could give one piece of advice to anyone wanting to take the leap and start sailing, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quentin<\/strong>: &#8220;Be comfortable with doubt and obstacles. They\u2019re part of the journey. Instead of fearing them, welcome them. Doubt is a strong indicator that you\u2019re learning, and big obstacles show that what you\u2019re doing is ambitious enough. Treat them as your friends and get along with them. They\u2019re good for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A metaphor for independence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Quentin\u2019s solo adventure is more than a sporting challenge. It\u2019s a metaphor for the journey of <strong>independent entrepreneurs<\/strong>: calculated risk, resilience, problem-solving, and the occasional moment of panic.
