Which professions come out on top, and why do two jobs that look similar on paper end up with such different numbers? For the second year running, the Accountable Index answers those questions with real data rather than guesswork.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-accountable-index\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\">What is the Accountable Index?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">The Accountable Index 2026 is based on anonymised invoicing data from around 7,100 Accountable users in Belgium, of whom roughly 4,050 are self-employed as their main occupation and about 3,100 as a secondary occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">In the Accountable Index we looks at three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list list-disc list-outside ml-0 mb-4 space-y-2\">\n<li class=\"font-inter text-base text-black\">how much each profession turns over;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"font-inter text-base text-black\">how they invoice;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"font-inter text-base text-black\">and how fast they grow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\"><strong>One thing stands out immediately: not every self-employed professional builds turnover the same way.<\/strong> Some professions run on a handful of large projects. Others work through a high volume of smaller transactions. And because it is a median rather than an average, it is not pulled upwards by a small group of very high earners: half of the professionals in the sample sit above it, half below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"who-earns-what-median-turnover-per-profession\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\">Who earns what? Median turnover per profession<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Here is how the professions in the Index compare, ranked by median annual turnover for full-time self-employed professionals active for more than one year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\"><strong>Brokers and financial advisers <\/strong>lead the ranking with a median of <strong>\u20ac199,003<\/strong>. <strong>Car dealers<\/strong> follow at <strong>\u20ac141,016<\/strong>, ahead of <strong>doctors (\u20ac125,241)<\/strong>, <strong>consultants, engineers and IT professionals (\u20ac120,720)<\/strong> and <strong>construction professionals (\u20ac105,065)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.accountable.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AccountableIndex_16-9_EN-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33403 rounded-lg max-w-full h-auto my-6\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.accountable.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AccountableIndex_16-9_EN-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.accountable.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AccountableIndex_16-9_EN-323x182.png 323w, https:\/\/www.accountable.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AccountableIndex_16-9_EN-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.accountable.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AccountableIndex_16-9_EN-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.accountable.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AccountableIndex_16-9_EN.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Nine of the fourteen professions clear \u20ac70,000 a year. Sales representatives and commercial agents, drivers and couriers, lawyers and legal professionals and maintenance professionals all sit comfortably above the overall median.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">At the other end of the spectrum are <strong>hair and beauty specialists (\u20ac37,403)<\/strong>, <strong>sports professionals (\u20ac39,498)<\/strong>, <strong>copywriters and translators (\u20ac44,676)<\/strong> and <strong>coaches (\u20ac49,971)<\/strong>. The gap between top and bottom is more than five to one, and it comes down to three things: the profession itself, the type of clients it serves, and how it sells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"starting-out-looks-very-different-depending-on-your-profession\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\">Starting out looks very different depending on your profession<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">The first year as a self-employed professional is rarely the most lucrative, but how slow that first year is varies enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Among consultants, engineers and IT professionals, <strong>59% stay below \u20ac20,000 in turnover during their first year<\/strong>. Among starting architects, that figure is <strong>93%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">In other words, almost every architect spends their first year building up a client base before the revenue follows, while a sizeable minority of consultants are already invoicing serious amounts from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"construction-professionals-turn-over-almost-twice-as-much-as-architects\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\">Construction professionals turn over almost twice as much as architects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Some of the most striking differences in the Index appear between professions that seem close together. Construction professionals reach a median annual turnover of \u20ac105,065. Architects and urban planners, who work on the very same buildings, land at \u20ac53,452: roughly half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Consultants, engineers and IT professionals go higher still at \u20ac120,720. Larger, more specialised assignments and higher invoice values tend to play a role here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\"><strong>The lesson is that a long education or a high degree of specialisation does not automatically translate into higher turnover. <\/strong>Rates, the type of assignments, cost structure and market demand all make a difference, and often a bigger one than the diploma on the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"fewer-invoices-but-higher-amounts-per-project\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\">Fewer invoices, but higher amounts per project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Behind the turnover figures lie very different business models, and the number of invoices a professional sends tells you a lot about theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list list-disc list-outside ml-0 mb-4 space-y-2\">\n<li class=\"font-inter text-base text-black\"><strong>Consultants and software professionals<\/strong> send a median of <strong>21 invoices a year<\/strong>, but each one is worth around <strong>\u20ac4,900<\/strong> on average. Their year is built on a limited number of substantial projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list list-disc list-outside ml-0 mb-4 space-y-2\">\n<li class=\"font-inter text-base text-black\"><strong>Small retailers and e-commerce entrepreneurs<\/strong>, by contrast, send a median of <strong>83 invoices a year<\/strong>, almost four times as many. Their turnover grows to a different rhythm, because the value per transaction is typically much lower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">The number of invoices alone therefore says very little. It is the combination of volume, rates and invoice value that determines how quickly a self-employed professional can build turnover. Sending more invoices is not the same as earning more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"from-a-year-and-a-half-to-five-and-a-half-years-to-reach-e100000\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\">From a year and a half to five and a half years to reach \u20ac100,000<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\"><strong>The differences become even clearer when you look at how long it takes self-employed professionals to reach \u20ac100,000 in cumulative turnover<\/strong>, based on their pace in the first quarters after starting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list list-disc list-outside ml-0 mb-4 space-y-2\">\n<li class=\"font-inter text-base text-black\"><strong>Consultants, engineers and IT professionals<\/strong> cross the \u20ac100,000 mark after roughly a year and a half at their current starting pace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"font-inter text-base text-black\"><strong>Construction professionals and paramedical professionals<\/strong> get there in about 19 months, and sales representatives follow at around 20 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">For other professions the road is considerably longer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list list-disc list-outside ml-0 mb-4 space-y-2\">\n<li class=\"font-inter text-base text-black\"><strong>Architects<\/strong> need just over three years on average, or 38 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"font-inter text-base text-black\"><strong>Hair and beauty specialists <\/strong>take around four and a half years. Small retailers and e-commerce entrepreneurs take the longest of all, at roughly five and a half years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">That is not a judgement on any of these professions. A hair salon and an IT consultancy are simply different businesses with different economics, and the Index makes that visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"turnover-is-only-part-of-the-picture\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\">Turnover is only part of the picture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">The figures show that there is no single financial profile of the self-employed professional. Turnover, the number of invoices and the value per invoice differ strongly from one profession to the next. That is why it is important not to look at total turnover alone, but also at costs, payment terms and cash flow. Together, they give a much more complete picture of how a business is really doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">That is worth keeping in mind whichever end of the ranking your profession sits at. A consultant with \u20ac120,000 in turnover and three overdue invoices worth \u20ac15,000 may be in a tighter spot than a hairdresser with \u20ac37,000 in turnover and clients who pay on the day. Turnover tells you how much you sold. Cash flow tells you whether you can pay yourself this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-does-your-business-compare\" class=\"wp-block-heading font-degular scroll-mt-32\">How does your business compare?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"font-inter text-base leading-relaxed mb-4 first-of-type:mt-0 text-black\">Whether you are above or below the median for your profession, knowing where you stand is the first step to steering your business deliberately.
