As a self-employed person with your own private limited company (BV), limited partnership (CommV) or management company, you are both employer and employee at the same time. That means you can grant yourself meal vouchers as part of your remuneration, one of the most popular fringe benefits in Belgium.

Meal vouchers let you increase your net income without extra social security contributions. But which provider should you choose? The Belgian market is dominated by three players: Monizze, Edenred and Pluxee (formerly Sodexo).

They all offer the same basic statutory product, but they differ on a number of points that can make a real difference, especially for the self-employed and SMEs. We compare them on this page.

Tax deductibility of meal vouchers in 2026

Meal vouchers are popular because they are exempt from social security contributions and are not treated as taxable income, as long as the statutory conditions are met. They are therefore a tax-efficient way to optimise your remuneration as a company director in a limited company (or that of your employees, if you have any).

Since 1 January 2026, the maximum value of a meal voucher is €10 per day actually worked. That €10 is made up of two parts:

  • Your company pays: a maximum of €8.91 per voucher (the employer's contribution)
  • You pay: a minimum of €1.09 per voucher (the employee's contribution, deducted from your salary)

You are free to set the value of your meal vouchers yourself, up to the statutory maximum of €10 per day worked. Although you could opt for vouchers of, say, €6 or €8, it is more tax-efficient for many companies to grant the maximum value.

From a face value of €8, the tax deductibility doubles from €2 to €4 per voucher, which is why meal vouchers of €10 are often the most advantageous choice.

€8 per voucher€10 per voucher
Employer's contribution€6.91€8.91
Employee's contribution€1.09€1.09
Value per month (20 days)€160€200
Tax-deductible for the company€2 per voucher€4 per voucher

What is the difference between Monizze, Edenred and Pluxee?

1. Monizze

Monizze is the only 100% Belgian provider of meal vouchers, eco vouchers, gift vouchers and sport & culture vouchers.

While its competitors were still working with paper vouchers, Monizze resolutely chose a fully digital approach from the day it was founded. No paper, just an electronic card and an app. That made it the first voucher fintech in Belgium and a pioneer whose vision helped drive the digitalisation of the sector in 2016.

Today, more than 95,000 Belgian companies and 750,000 active users rely on Monizze for their fringe benefits. Thanks to its focus on the Belgian market, transparent pricing and a user-friendly digital experience, Monizze is especially popular with self-employed company directors and SMEs.

Strengths:

  • Purpose-built for the self-employed and SMEs. As a company director you can sign up entirely online, without an account manager or lengthy administrative procedures.
  • Predictable costs: Monizze charges a fixed amount per order, rather than a percentage of the meal voucher value like its competitors. As a result, your costs stay the same, even when you opt for meal vouchers at the maximum value.
  • Transparent pricing: Monizze is the only provider that publishes its rates. With management fees from €7.99 per beneficiary per order, Monizze is also among the most affordable solutions for the self-employed and SMEs.
  • 4-in-1 card: meal, eco, gift and sport & culture vouchers on a single card.
  • Accountant access: you can give your accountant or payroll office direct access to your customer area, making administration and follow-up easier.
  • User-friendly app: with a score of 4.7/5 based on more than 6,500 reviews on Google Play, the Monizze app is among the best rated in the sector. You can easily check your balance, transactions and expiry dates.
  • Advantageous for merchants too: with a merchant commission of 1.50%, Monizze charges the lowest transaction cost on the market (compared with 1.55% at Edenred). That makes the card attractive for both users and affiliated merchants.
  • Customer service you can reach by phone: you are helped directly by a local team that knows Belgian regulations and answers within three rings, with no menu or hold music.
  • Strong focus on security and sustainability: Monizze holds an EcoVadis Gold rating (2025) and an ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for information security, among others.
  • Acceptance network of around 36,000 points.

Limitations:

  • Less suited to large international companies that need a multi-country solution.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay are not supported, but Monizze is working on an innovative solution due to arrive soon.

2. Edenred

Edenred is the international market leader in workplace payment solutions and operates in more than 45 countries. In Belgium the product is known as Ticket Restaurant and targets businesses of all sizes, with a particularly strong position among medium-sized and large companies.

Strengths:

  • Best customer satisfaction score on Trustpilot: 4.4 to 4.5/5 based on more than 1,400 reviews.
  • Acceptance network of 38,000+ partners.
  • Integration with Payconiq and the Mastercard payment network.
  • Seamless connection with all the major payroll offices (SD Worx, Securex, Partena, Liantis, Acerta, UCM, Group S).
  • Stable, mature technological infrastructure.

Limitations:

  • No public pricing: rates on request, which makes comparison harder.
  • International company: less local focus than Monizze.

3. Pluxee

Until 2024, Pluxee was still Sodexo Benefits & Rewards. It is the historical market leader in Belgium with the largest market share and the broadest acceptance network, with more than 40,000 points of sale, including Carrefour, Delhaize, Colruyt, Lidl and Aldi.

Strengths:

  • Large acceptance network of 45,000+ points.
  • Broad ecosystem of fringe benefits.
  • Modern platforms and personalised tools for HR.

Limitations:

  • Low Trustpilot score: 1.5 to 1.9/5, an unfortunate consequence of the transition period in 2024.
  • Longer waiting times at customer service are a structural weak point.
  • No public pricing.

Conclusion: who should choose what?

All three providers offer the same statutory product, but the differences in service, price and philosophy are not insignificant. Monizze stands out as the only fully Belgian player that went fully digital from the very start, an approach that helped shape the rest of the sector. Edenred excels in customer satisfaction and stability. Pluxee has a large acceptance network but needs to repair its reputation after the rebrand.

  • Are you a small self-employed person or an SME? Then Monizze is often the strongest choice: transparent pricing, low costs, an excellent app and a Belgian customer service that actually helps you.
  • As a medium-sized company, Edenred offers the best combination of customer satisfaction, technological stability and a large acceptance network. Integration with payroll offices runs smoothly.
  • As a large or international company, both Edenred and Pluxee can meet your needs. Pluxee has the largest network and broad HR tools, but bear in mind the improvements still under way after the rebrand.

In the world where everyone seems to be out to get small entrepreneurs and overwhelm them with new rules, more taxes and reporting obligations, Accountable often feels like the one steady partner that actually wants you to succeed, providing quick, clear and personalised support. Thank you!

The availability of your team to help and guide people to understand their finances better is what really makes Accountable valuable. While the AI is able to give answers to most basic questions, specific scenarios need counsel from a human which your team performs beautifully.

They always answer for questions wherever is via direct e-mail or through app. If they can’t answer fully they will forward you to the right place. Documents were always prepared well and ready to send further to government. Everything is intuitive in the app and easy to sort out even for someone completely green in this field.
