As a self-employed person, whether you are a sole trader or run a company, you can choose from plenty of accounting software. That is great, but it does not make choosing any easier. Should the tool connect to your bank account? Prepare your VAT return? Send Peppol invoices? And do you need an accountant, or would you rather do everything yourself?
On this page we set out the key criteria and compare four tools that self-employed people often consider: Accountable, Dexxter, Billit and Yuki.
An honest note upfront: Accountable is our own app. We therefore compare on points you can check yourself, and we also tell you when another tool is a better fit.
Every self-employed person and every business has its own needs. That is why there is no single answer to the question "what is the best accounting software?". These six questions will get you well on your way:
If you are a sole trader with fairly simple bookkeeping, you can in principle handle it yourself with the right software. If you have a company, working with an accountant is usually advisable.
Some tools are built for self-employed people who go it alone, others for accounting firms. That determines whether the interface and features suit you.
A bank connection pulls in your transactions automatically, so you do not have to enter them by hand. Check how many accounts you can connect. Bonus points if you can also open a business account in the same app.
Many tools stop at creating invoices and uploading business expenses. As a self-employed person, you also have to deal with your VAT return, your social contributions and your tax return. Accounting software that integrates all of this saves you extra subscriptions or a higher bill from your accountant.
Since the start of 2026, Peppol has been mandatory for VAT-registered self-employed people who invoice other businesses. It is therefore essential that the tool you choose supports e-invoicing via the Peppol network, preferably with no limit on the number of invoices.
If you work with an accountant or bookkeeper, you want to be able to give them access or export your data to their own software.
Do not look only at the free trial or the entry price. Check whether there is a free version, whether you pay per document, and which features are only included in a more expensive plan. That way you avoid surprises later.
Think about the future of your business too: you may be self-employed on the side now and a certain tool suits that well, but if your business takes off, the move to full-time self-employment or a company can come quickly. Choose accounting software that grows with you.

Accountable combines Peppol invoicing, bookkeeping, VAT returns, help with your tax return, the calculation of your social contributions and a free business account in a single app.
You can see at any moment how much tax, social contributions and VAT you have to pay, and when. An AI Tax Advisor answers questions about your tax situation, including outside office hours. Your accountant gets free access to your data, or can export your records to their own software via Accountable for Accountants.
The free plan includes unlimited Peppol invoicing and a 100% free business account. Paid plans start from €9.90 per month and offer more features, such as filing your tax returns through the app, a tax guarantee of up to €10,000 and legal expenses insurance.
The tool suits sole traders on the side and in their main occupation (including student entrepreneurs), as well as small companies.
Accountable is less suitable if you also need a full CRM or project management tool, or an integration with your web shop (e.g. Shopify).
Dexxter is accounting software for sole traders, with Peppol e-invoicing, VAT returns and filing reminders.
It is a good choice for starters, side-business owners and student entrepreneurs who want to do their own bookkeeping and prefer a clear annual price (from €220). There is no free version and the software is not suitable for companies, which can be limiting if your business grows.

Billit is built around exchanging and processing invoices and integrates well with accounting firms. Handy if you already have an accountant and mainly want to streamline your invoices.
You will still need a separate tool or an accountant for your VAT return and taxes. Because you pay per document, it is worth working out your expected volume.
Yuki is primarily an accounting platform for accountancy firms. If your accountant already works with Yuki, it is a logical choice. If you want to take your bookkeeping into your own hands, you get no help with your VAT or tax return: your accountant handles those obligations.
Want to switch from your current accounting software to Accountable? We are happy to give you three months off your annual subscription if you switch. Contact us to claim the switching discount.
💡Also interesting: How can I switch from other software to Accountable?
It depends on your situation. If you want to manage everything yourself (bookkeeping, banking, VAT and taxes), an all-in-one app such as Accountable is the most complete choice. If you work entirely through an accountant, what matters most is that you both use the same software.
Yes, in principle. A sole trader usually has fairly simple bookkeeping and is not required to work with an accountant. Good software, such as Accountable, follows the tax rules for you and reminds you of your deadlines. We are nevertheless convinced that an accountant adds value, and we recommend getting support if you are in doubt or need personalised tax advice.

Yes, the costs are business expenses. For e-invoicing software (including Accountable), you can even deduct 120% of the costs until 2027.
Want to see for yourself whether Accountable suits you? You can try the app for free, with no obligation. You can find more about pricing on our website.

Everything was great! All my questions were answered quickly and in a friendly manner.
In the world where everyone seems to be out to get small entrepreneurs and overwhelm them with new rules, more taxes and reporting obligations, Accountable often feels like the one steady partner that actually wants you to succeed, providing quick, clear and personalised support. Thank you!
This is an amazing application with great support on issues. In short as in day I am addicted to it (in a positive way). I myself is from IT project management and the way they have captured the user requirement, it’s phenomenal.
UI is great. Feature packed and very easy to use. The team at Accountable were VERY quick to respond and their team of technicians soon had a fix in place. Very happy with the level of service so far. Thumbs up from me!
This program is a lifesaver, and it is always improving. Plus, it has an AI chat feature that is actually useful.
The coaching session on tax management was excellent, good material, excellent explanations and very insightful. Combined with the AI I never feel alone with Accountable.
The availability of your team to help and guide people to understand their finances better is what really makes Accountable valuable. While the AI is able to give answers to most basic questions, specific scenarios need counsel from a human which your team performs beautifully.
Fast and careful answers from Alina. Top service. Thank you.
They always answer for questions wherever is via direct e-mail or through app. If they can’t answer fully they will forward you to the right place. Documents were always prepared well and ready to send further to government. Everything is intuitive in the app and easy to sort out even for someone completely green in this field.
